Widespread Panic has been a staple in jam/southern rock since the mid-80s growing their popularity from the nurturing Athens, Georgia college scene. The hook up between the rare documentary, The Earth Will Swallow You, and the Charleston Music Hall came about when we met Chris Hanson aka “Rito Bandito” who made the film with his brother Geoffrey during a Dig South meet up at The Alley. We began to talk about music, and Bandito hit us hard with the fact that he had made an amazing in-depth documentary following Widespread Panic around the country during their monumental Summer 2000 year. Cheers to Dig South networking! As we are not big enough to house Panic ourselves, this is a great way to bring the many amazing musicians in the documentary to the Charleston Music Hall stage. It is going to be an unforgettable rock experience with the big screen and the Music Hall’s sound system. Close your eyes and you might think you are at Panic show.
Added to the rock solid line-up within Widespread Panic (the late great Michael Houser, John Bell, John “JoJo” Hermann, Todd Nance, Domingo S. Ortiz, and Dave Schools) are special apprearances from Jorma Kaukonen of Hot Tuna and Jefferson Airplane, Grammy Award winner Taj Maja, Vic Chesnutt, Merl Saunders, Jerry Joseph, Bloodkin, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Recreating the live WSP concert experience is Charleston’s very own Widespread Panic cover band, 54 Bicycles, performing before and after the documentary with songs from the film as well as all the favorites from the Panic discography. This documentary will transport Charleston fans to the neon oasis of Las Vegas, the heart of the Big Apple – Central Park, and the natural beauty of Red Rocks Amphitheatre with Panic as the soundtrack for this epic tour.
