TROVE: Sarah Boyts Yoder
Working from her studio in Charlottesville, VA, Sarah Boyts Yoder uses elements of collage, figuration, abstraction, and landscape to build richly layered and colorful compositions. The images balance precariously between familiar and strange; known and unknown.

Boyts Yoder uses cartoonish iconography, text, and collage materials simultaneously, creating a complex and textured painting surface. Her response to this surface creates a conversational tone. She reacts to the painting and learns from it.

The works in this exhibition demonstrate the creative process as a journey. Listening becomes as important as doing and the resulting images are playfully open-ended. Boyts Yoder is able to invite the viewer in as an interpreter.

A multitude of associations and experiences seem to spring from these images. A trove of possible meanings explores the imagination’s capabilities, questions what painting can be, dreams of the unseen, and illuminates the potential for human connection that exists in these questions.
